The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords never to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes immediately after NSFAS received experiences about some accommodation vendors who require NSFAS-funded students to pay for a deposit or top-up payment as a way to get access to the authorized private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation providers of the obligatory conditions, as supplied by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement between the non-public accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS stated in a statement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states which the lease will likely be paid month-to-month into the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf with the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation providers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not have to have or permit the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or almost every other forms of payment on the lessor, or another person in connection website with this arrangement, such as payment of rent, while awaiting payment from NSFAS.
